Drinking lots of pure water is good for you. It’s getting hard to find truly good water these days, so many people either install a water filter on their kitchen tap at home, or else they buy purified water from their local health food store or co-op.
It is generally recommended that you drink 64 ounces of water (not juice, not pop, not coffee) each and every day. This water will help flush toxins out of your system, keep your elimination system functioning properly, as well as encourage clear, healthy-looking skin. Drinking plenty of water is a natural appetite suppressant and is also touted as the best antidote for water retention. Since the body is comprised of about 70% water, it makes sense that water is an important component of any sound diet.
Many people who are trying to drink more water for health reasons also are making other positive adjustments to their diet at the same time. Usually this means eating more high-fiber foods. If you up your intake of fiber but aren’t drinking enough fluids, you will get constipated. The most common cause of constipation is too little water. Constipation is more than just uncomfortable, it is not good for your body! Think about it—your body is storing toxic garbage it needs to get rid of. A healthy body will have at least one bowel movement every day, if not more.
The best way to get all that water in, I have found, is to fill up a 32-ounce sports bottle twice a day. It’s easier to count two sports bottles than it is to count 8 glasses. If you’re drinking tap water, filling up a large container allows the water to warm to room temperature for better absorption. In addition, a sports bottle is portable, making it possible for busy people to take their water wherever they go.
My experience has been that if I spread my water consumption throughout the whole day, rather than drinking it all in two or three enormous gulps, I spend less time in the bathroom. When I guzzle water, it seems to go straight through to my bladder. However, let me also suggest that you not drink water immediately before, during, or after meals, as this dilutes digestive juices, thus making it harder for the body to digest food properly.
