Midwest Book Review: This takes a different tack than most gardening guides, inviting gardeners to make their own pesticides and repellents using natural ingredients on hand; from ammonia to beer. Keep gophers and skunks away from the property, identify and eliminate harmful insects without the use of poison, and use companion planting, beneficial organisms, and other choices to promote natural pest control for home and garden.
Synopsis: Over 100 of America's finest gardeners--ranging from botanic garden specialists to organic produce growers--reveal their best ideas in this book. Easy-to- follow techniques for planting, pest control, propagating, pruning, seed-starting, creating more beautiful flower gardens, harvesting bigger tomatoes, and more. Over 300 illustrations.
Synopsis: An amazing collection of more than 300 extraordinary experiments and projects with apple seeds, beans, potatoes, fruit pits, vegetables, herbs and everything that grows. Contains a glossary, reading list, full-color, how-to illustrations, and a bonus chapter that lists seed catalogs that kids can obtain from sources in the U.S. and Canada, mostly free. Perfect for home or classroom.
Synopsis: An indispensable guide to small-scale organic farming that features advice on everything from building and stocking a pond to planting an orchard or making cheese. This extremely practical and easy-to-use guide, first published in 1972, is for full-time or part-time country dwellers/gardeners. Illus.
Customer Review (rating=*****): "The difinitive source of information about sustainable gardening (agriculture on any scale, actually), with understandable diagrams and explanations. The concepts are simple; the work much easier than the old-fashioned "row garden"; the results are more bountiful; your health benefits; the fertility of your soil grows; the environment improves. This will become your bible for planting and growing without chemical fertilizers, insecticides, or weed control. The sustainable methods of producing the food we eat in a small space makes more sense than the wastful techniques perfected and promoted in the last two generations."
Customer Review (ratinb=*****): "This book provides a lot of great ideas which I have never seen elsewhere. These include techniques for weed control, getting the earliest crops, getting the most out of available space, and expecially for reducing labor. And they work!"
Synopsis: Maria Rodale, who comes to organic gardening naturally, felt for many years that while there was plenty of good information about organic gardening, there was neither an existing primer that taught all the very basics nor a book that showed that organic gardening can be a beautiful, sophisticated way to plant. So she wrote this one, which, from the discussion of planning your garden on graph paper and the tips on digging up grass to the recipes for using the fall harvest, is utterly, seductively beautiful.
Synopsis: A beautiful-and practical-journal as an essential companion to her popular Maria Rodale's Organic Gardening. With a similar design, the lush, four-color photographs and illustrations accent the seasonal garden designs and journal pages for gardeners to track their progress, indicate problems and solutions, or simply observe the flora and fauna that surround them in their own thriving organic gardens.
Book News, Inc., 05/01/96: This expansion of a now-classic guide originally published in 1989 is intended for the serious gardener or small-scale market farmer. It describes practical and sustainable ways of growing superb organic vegetables, with detailed coverage of scale and capital, marketing, livestock, the winter garden, soil fertility, weeds, and many other topics.
Synopsis: Stell starts with an analysis of soil: how it was formed, its different textures, its structure, and the importance of drainage and earthworms. She explains how to create fertile soil with the help of nutrients and organic matter and what hand tools are needed to cultivate the soil--trowels, hoes, spades, shovels, weeders, forks, rakes, etc., as well as power tools such as shredders, trimmers, mowers, rototillers, and cultivators. There's a chapter on making and using compost and how to construct composting bins, a chapter on the use of mulches, and one on choosing and using fertilizers. Another chapter gives data on starting a new garden and deals with raised beds, sunken beds, slopes, and terraces.
The publisher, www.loompanics.com, 12/19/96: A practical guide of organic gardening techniques that will enable anyone to grow vegetables, fruits, nuts, herbs, medicines and other useful products, thereby increasing self-sufficiency and enhancing the quality of life. Includes sections of edible landscaping; greenhouses; hydroponics and computer gardening (including the Internet); seed saving and propagation; preserving and storing crops; and much more, including fact filled appendices.
Synopsis: Jeavon's new book, coauthored by Cox, is written for gardeners trying biointensive gardening for the first time. The focus is on the soil; and a good way to ensure sustainable soil fertility, the authors say, is the biointensive method of growing food. To achieve this, they give instructions and suggestions on what to grow; preparing biointensive beds, compost, and plating; growing compost crops, such as vetch, fava beans, wheat, and rye; and growing "calorie crops" (wheat, oats, dry beans, and corn). The authors make suggestions on companion planting--i.e., which crops to put beside each other for the best results.
