Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment Inside the U.S. Meat Industry (hardcover)--Eisnitz
Customer Review (rating=*****): "Slaughter of live animals is never pretty, but in many of the USDA supervised plants, the conditions are unbelievably cruel and digustingly filthy. The workers are exploited, placed in harm's way, and are treated little better than the animals they have to process. The animals themselves meet terribly slow deaths when stun bolts fail and stick pit knives don't cut deep enough to allow them to bleed to death before skinning and gutting. And if the cruelty isn't enough to grab you, wait until you read about the offal blocked drains that flood slaughterhouse floors with blood and fecal material. Wait until you read about manure being classified as a "cosmetic defect" that can simply be rinsed off and the meat passed off as USDA select to an unsuspecting public. This book will turn your stomach and make you angry."

FOOD COMBINING

Fit for Life--Diamond
Customer Comment: rating=10: The best weight loss book ever written. This is the paperback that changed my diet and started me on the road to ultimate health. Based on the principles of Natural Hygiene, in this book the Diamonds tell you precisely how to lose all kinds of weight while also improving your health as a side effect. Sure beats those side effects the drug folks provide us with when they try to make us healthy, eh? Written in a wonderfully conversational style, Fit for Life reads like a novel while providing some of the easiest "how-to-do-it" information in the entire field of health literature. If there's a single book I'd recommend to get someone off the Standard American Diet and on to a new, healthy approach, this is the one.

NN comment: I read this book, and though I loved many of its points and have implemented a few of them, I did find the rules of food-combining restrictive to the point that I did not want to do it. G.G.

The Crazy Makers: How the Food Industry Is Destroying Our Brains and Harming Our Children (hardcover)--Simontacchi
Synopsis: We already worry that our food makes us fat, dull, disease-prone, and sleepy. Now we have to worry that it also makes us crazy. According to certified clinical nutritionist Carol Simontacchi, the food industries that give us packaged, processed, artificially flavored, chemical-ridden, artificially colored, nutrient-stripped pseudo foods such as sodas, processed soups, sugared cereals, and fiberless bread "wantonly destroy our bodies and our brains, all in the name of profit." We Americans (adults and children) eat 200 pounds of sugar and artificial sweeteners each year. Our children's test scores and grades drop. We become violent, illogical, moody, depressed, drug-addicted, and crazy. The reason, according to the author, who is pursuing a doctorate in brain nutrition, is that we're starving our brains with lack of nutrition.

Empty Harvest: Understanding the Link Between Our Food, Our Immunity, and Our Planet--Anderson, Mark
Customer Review (rating=*****): "Empty Harvest clearly explains the link between the lack of minerals in our crop soils and the modern day diseases associated with mineral deficiencies (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.). The author shows many excellent examples of how mankind is slowly destroying it's future by robbing the Earth of the very things that give us and support life itself."

Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills (paperback)--Blaylock
Customer Review (rating=*****): "The people in this country have trusted the FDA and medical establishment to guard their health and neglected to take responsibility for it themselves. Excitotoxins The Taste That Kills makes it painfully obvious that we can not trust the FDA and the Food Giants when it comes to our health and quality of life. The information contained in this book, if taken to heart and applied, will prevent tens of thousands from suffering some of the major debilitating physical problems of this century. If we would get back to eating a plant-based diet and eliminate the processed foods with all of the toxic additives we could reverse most physical problems."

Customer Review (rating=*****): "Anyone who takes the responsibility of buying food for him/herself and/or others should have this book as a guide. It gives the bottom line of what many of the common chemicals that are used in the processing of our foods do to our bodies. You don't have to be a phD to understand what's spelled out so well in this pocket size book, you only have to have the courage to follow its inherent message and be well on your way to being healthy again."
